Central Region Co-op | Cosmos, MN Agronomy Center

Building What Growers Need, Where They Need It
When Central Region Co-op identified an opportunity to better serve farmers in a growing area of central Minnesota, they knew the solution would require more than expanding existing infrastructure. It called for something brand new.
The result is a greenfield agronomy center in Cosmos, Minnesota: a purpose-built chemical and liquid fertilizer facility designed to bring custom agronomy services directly to the growers who need them.
The Cosmos facility is a significant addition to Central Region Co-op’s network of agronomy locations, allowing the co-op to extend its reach and deliver the same high level of service its members have come to expect. Like GDC’s other agronomy center projects, the Cosmos build was designed around the growers it will serve, not adapted from a template.
From Bare Ground to Operational: Navigating a Complex Build
A Greenfield Project in a Challenging Environment
The Cosmos facility is a greenfield build, which meant the team was not working with an existing structure to retrofit or expand. They were transforming an open site into a fully operational agronomy center.
Projects of this kind require meticulous coordination from the ground up: site preparation, utilities, foundations, structural construction, equipment installation, and automation all must come together in the right sequence to keep the project on track.
Central Minnesota weather added another layer of complexity. Winter and early spring conditions slowed progress on multiple fronts, creating delays the team had to work through in real time. Even with those setbacks, the contractors on site showed the kind of commitment and flexibility that makes a difference on a complex build. They stayed engaged, adapted as conditions changed, and continued pushing the project forward.
Joining Mid-Project and Moving Forward
Gales Design & Consulting was brought on after the project was already underway, which presented its own set of challenges.
Planning, design decisions, and early purchasing were already in motion, which meant the GDC team had to quickly assess the full scope of the project, understand what had already been committed, and step into an oversight role without the benefit of having been part of the earliest planning conversations.
For Tim Hale, GDC’s project oversight lead on the Cosmos build, this made the work of building relationships, with the client, with contractors, and with on-site leadership, all the more important. Clear communication and mutual trust became essential tools for keeping the project moving in the right direction.
Project Highlights:
- Greenfield construction: built from the ground up on a new site
- Liquid fertilizer storage and handling system
- Ammonia storage and handling
- Custom agronomy batching and mixing based on individual grower inputs
- Integrated automation for efficient blending and load-out operations
- Office space built directly into the facility for a streamlined, single-building operation
- Exterior tank farm with liquid fertilizer and ammonia tanks
- No grain handling: a focused, agronomy-only facility

On-Site Leadership: Roger Trevanese
One of the most meaningful parts of the Cosmos project was the working relationship that developed between GDC and on-site project manager Roger Trevanese.
Like many complex projects, the early days required both sides to understand how the other worked. As the project progressed, that adjustment period became a strong, productive partnership.
Roger proved to be an invaluable presence on site. His steady involvement helped keep contractors accountable and ensured the day-to-day work reflected the standards the project required.
That kind of reliable, boots-on-the-ground presence is what keeps a project running smoothly, and Roger delivered it throughout the Cosmos build.
His dedication to the project, and his willingness to work through the challenges that came with a mid-winter construction schedule in central Minnesota, played a meaningful role in bringing the Cosmos facility to completion.
Key Contractors & Vendors
The Cosmos facility came together through the work of a skilled group of contractors, each playing a critical role in delivering the finished product:
- Anderson Electric – Electrical
- Countrywide Lumber – Building Construction
- BNR Plumbing – Plumbing
- Mathewitz Excavation – Site Excavation
- Taylor Automation – Process Automation
- Precision Tank and Plumbing – Tanks and Piping

Serving New Communities Across Minnesota
Central Region Co-op operates agronomy facilities across its service territory, and the Cosmos location represents their continued commitment to putting the right resources in the right places for their grower-members. A dedicated agronomy center allows the co-op to deliver custom agronomy batching and mixing based on individual grower inputs, putting a high level of precision agronomy service within reach for local farmers.
As the Cosmos facility moves into operation, it stands as a reflection of what a well-built agronomy center can do for an agricultural community, and what the right team can accomplish when they work together through real challenges.
